Handling advices

Cables are more than simply a mixture of copper and plastics. Cables require correct treatment to avoid physical damage and thereof resulting electrical transmission problems. Please find hereafter some tips for correct handling for outdoor and underground cables.

Storage

-          Storage possible under open skies.

-          If stored in heated rooms please grant acclimatisation period of at least 24 h before installing the cable (precipitating humidity within the cable).

-          Cable ends must always be hermetically sealed with suitable cable caps (watertight and airtight).

-          Drums to be stored always upright on both flanges, not to be laid on the flange.

Transport/Shipment

-          Not to be transported lying on the flange, transport always upright standing on both flanges.

-          Always use suitable means for loading and unloading (forklift, crane etc.).

-          Drums needs to be securely fastened on trucks or other means of transport, tie-down belts not to be used directly on the cable.

-          Do not staple drums on their flanges.

-          Pay attention to mandatory roll direction, shown on the cable flanges. This is the direction to roll the drum. Roll direction prevents the cable from getting loose on the drum.

Installation

-          Never under-run specified minimum bending radiuses of the cable mentioned in manufacturer´s datasheet.

-          Open cable ends are always held dry and clean during laying and assembly by using tents.

-          Truncated cable ends are to be hermetically sealed after termination of laying and assembly work.

-          Only use suitable means for pulling and laying the cable into the ground or in ducts

-          Never install cable without water- and airtight cable caps.

-          Never over-run specified pulling forces/tensile strengths shown in manufacturer´s datasheet, otherwise cable will be irreversibly damaged.

-          Always monitor pulling forces arising during laying of cable, write pulling forces diagram.

-          Pull cable from the cable only tangential, never over the flange.

-          Use pulleys and rollers whenever you turn corners.

-          Avoid to draggle cables, use rollers.

-          To splice or to connect cables always use appropriate and approved installation and mounting devices (i.e. heat-shrinkage insulating sleeves or distribution boxes).

-          Respect given temperature ranges during storage, installation and operation.

General

Always respect data and information given by manufacturers of components or given by the customer. The installing company is responsible for all work and quality. So take care to handle cables and components carefully and with respect.
